Rue Alexandre School

Project Complete
Expansion of a 4,000m2 primary school on 3 levels and redevelopment of some existing premises. The building comprises 8 kindergarten classes, 6 primary classes and 1 double gymnasium. Mechanical system featuring geothermal wells to minimize energy costs. Building structure composed of conventional steel framing. Building erected in cohabitation with occupants of existing school. Landscaped site including parking lot and schoolyard.

Major extension of 3,385 m2 on 3 levels to minimize the footprint and provide greater outdoor space with play areas, relaxation areas and green spaces. The project also includes major interior redevelopment work in the existing part of the building, to bring the two projects together into a single school. The success of the project’s layout is based on fluid circulation that allows rapid access to the premises and floors, regardless of where users are in the building. A connecting corridor was designed to unite the existing with the new. Located only on the 2nd floor, it passes through the upper part of the gymnasium’s storage area without cluttering the rest of the floor space.

With modern facilities, new classrooms, a new sports arena with a stage that can be retracted as needed, and a large multi-purpose room that can create two spaces thanks to a removable partition, the Perséides school will accommodate around 400 local students, from preschool to grade 6. Several spaces will also be available for use by community organizations, including a solidarity space (troc counter).

One of the main challenges of the project was to design an extension without significantly reducing the schoolyard area. The project includes the addition of 5 regular classrooms, 10 kindergarten classrooms, a multi-purpose room and a double gymnasium. In addition, the building features impressive eco-responsible measures.
