Des Sommets Elementary School

Project Complete
Construction of a new 7,500 m² elementary school spread over 3 levels. The facility includes 10 kindergarten classrooms, 30 primary classrooms, and 3 gymnasiums. The mechanical system features geothermal wells to minimize energy costs. The building structure consists of a conventional steel frame. The site includes a 70-space parking lot, car and bus drop-off zones, as well as a 3,500 m² schoolyard with various recreational elements.

In response to Mascouche’s growing population and with the aim of enhancing the region’s educational offerings, the Centre de services scolaire des Affluents undertook the construction of a next-generation elementary school. Commissioned in December 2021, the new facility spans 7,500 m² over three floors. Its interior layout includes a total of 40 classrooms — 10 of which are dedicated to kindergarten — along with three gymnasiums, a multipurpose room featuring an eye-catching design with a high wood-paneled ceiling and distinctive angular geometry, and a fully glazed library filled with natural light.

The circulation areas were designed to create additional learning and relaxation zones: furnished alcoves with benches and tables offer students flexible spaces for collaboration or quiet study, depending on their needs.

From a technical perspective, the building was designed with a conventional steel frame and a responsible approach to energy efficiency.

The site includes a 70-space parking lot, designated drop-off zones for cars and school buses, as well as a 3,500 m² schoolyard featuring various recreational elements such as a soccer field, a multisport area, a snakes and ladders game, a wooden play structure, and a running track.

The building features a green roof terrace that enhances thermal insulation and promotes biodiversity in the suburban environment.

Sustainable design

The mechanical system incorporates geothermal wells connected to a centralized ventilation network with heat recovery. Combined with high-efficiency LED lighting, this setup reduces the building’s energy consumption by 27% compared to the standards of the current National Energy Code for Buildings. Two electric vehicle charging stations were also installed to promote sustainable mobility.
