Jean-Baptiste-Meilleur School

Project Complete
Expansion of a 6,285m² secondary school on 3 levels. The work consists of the construction of 32 classrooms, a multi-purpose room, a double gymnasium, administrative offices and miscellaneous work in the existing building. Expansion of the bus parking lot and a new link to the main walkers' entrance. Mechanical system featuring geothermal wells to minimize energy costs. Building structure composed of conventional steel framing. Drilled steel pile system. Building erected in cohabitation with occupants of existing school. Landscaped lot with 176 new parking spaces.

Construction of 2 new buildings to complement the existing one, a multi-purpose facility for regular high school students, vocational training and adult education. The first wing (1,726m2 on ground level), located at the front of the site and intended for regular students, has 3 floors housing 32 classrooms, as well as laboratories and student living areas. To shift away from the cold concrete schools of the 1960s, the designers opted for natural lighting and the use of wood. The cladding also features aluminum and blue fleurdelisé accents, in keeping with the Quebec government’s architectural vision for schools. To the back, the new building houses a 1,067m2 sports block, including a double gymnasium and changing rooms. The school’s existing gymnasiums are available to the community. The project was not aiming for environmental certification but does incorporate some elements of sustainable development.
