Repair of the Lachine Canal walls – Reach 4 (Sectors 14 to 17)
This rehabilitation project for the Lachine Canal walls is part of an initiative to preserve and enhance Canada’s hydraulic heritage. Located in Reach 4, between Sectors 14 and 17 in Lachine, the work focuses on the structural repair of the masonry retaining walls, which have been significantly deteriorated by time and exposure to freeze-thaw cycles.
The interventions include repointing, foundation stabilization, partial replacement of stone courses, and the implementation of discreet reinforcement techniques to preserve the historic appearance of the canal.
The main challenge is to balance durability, public safety, and respect for the heritage characteristics of this iconic site within Quebec’s canal network. The project is coordinated with Parks Canada to minimize its impact on canal users and surrounding ecosystems while adhering to high conservation standards.
