Director of Special Projects
The Director of Special Projects is responsible for structuring and taking full charge of Tisseur’s private building projects under $12 million. He or she ensures the overall performance of this segment—from business development to project delivery—by dedicating the necessary time and energy to make it an organized and high-performing operation.
The incumbent reports to the Vice President, Alternative Projects. He or she leads a team of project resources and may, as needed, mobilize certain resources from the Alternative and Private Projects Department (particularly in estimating).
Roles and responsibilities
The main responsibilities include:
Department Management
Oversee all special projects and ensure their overall performance (quality, timelines, profitability, safety, client satisfaction).
Structuring the department’s operating procedures and developing tools, processes, and metrics specific to the $0–12 million segment.
Reporting on the portfolio’s progress, risks, and opportunities to the Vice President.
Ensuring the implementation of the sector’s strategy in accordance with the overarching strategy.
Project Management
Manage projects from pre-construction through to completion, ensuring compliance with cost, schedule, quality, and health and safety commitments.
Oversee the pre-construction phase (feasibility, budgeting, planning) and supervise execution (progress tracking, cost control, contract management, change management).
Client Relations
Serve as the primary point of contact for clients on special projects and build lasting business relationships.
Ensure transparent and proactive communication, and maintain client satisfaction throughout the project.
Subcontractor Relations and Market Development
Develop, qualify, and maintain a pool of reliable subcontractors suited to the special projects niche.
Actively expand the market by identifying new partners, negotiating agreements, and evaluating performance throughout projects.
Team Management
Supervise, motivate, and develop the teams under your responsibility.
Be responsible for recruiting staff for your team.
Coordinate resources mobilized on an ad hoc basis from the Alternative and Private Projects Department, in close collaboration with other managers.
Business Development
Maintain a steady pipeline of qualified opportunities in the $0–$12 million building project segment.
Actively solicit business from potential clients, project owners, architects, and engineers, and represent Tisseur at relevant events.
Collaborate on the preparation of service proposals and support estimation efforts for targeted projects.
Required skills
Hold a university degree or college diploma in architecture, construction engineering, or project management;
Have at least 10 years of project management experience, including at least 5 years in team management or a leadership role;
Have proven experience in client relations, negotiating with subcontractors, and business development.
Plus: experience helping to structure a new business unit.
Solid mastery of construction project management principles (pre-construction, estimating, execution, contract management).
Ability to provide preliminary estimates for projects in the design phase (Class D and C).
Motivational leadership, business acumen, and results-oriented mindset.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Strong political savvy and a proven commitment to customer service.
Autonomy and ability to handle the ambiguity inherent in a construction role.
Ability to mentor staff in the Special Projects department and develop new talent.
